Head of Livestock

As Head of Livestock, you will lead the operational excellence and strategic growth of our livestock enterprises. You will be responsible for the animal welfare, animal health, feed systems, and production across our poultry (broilers and layers) and pig operations, with potential oversight of sheep in the future.  This role is hands-on, ensuring the highest productivity and welfare standards across our livestock operations.

Day-to-day responsibilities include leading a team of 4 officers, overseeing egg collection, planning animal movement, supporting the slaughter of broilers, and general husbandry tasks. As a Head of Department, you will be a manager on our farm. A key part of your duties will be to help train and build the capacity of team members to work more independently, think critically, and uphold best practice in animal health, welfare, and food safety.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Increasing livestock productivity and survival rates across our farm
  • Building and leading a high-performing operations team (improvements in feed conversion rates, finding opportunities to embed circular farming systems that connect livestock with orchard operations)
  • Implementing efficient systems for health monitoring, data capture, and cost control
  • Working cross-functionally with processing, senior management, and other farm operations teams to plan and coordinate activities

What You'll Do:

  • Develop and execute the livestock operations strategy aligned with Tamu Tamu's growth plan
  • Design adn oversee animal health and nutrition programmes
  • Manage breeding, husbandry, and disease control systems
  • Supervise and mentor team members
  • Collaborate with other farm operations teams to integrate livestock and cropping systems
  • Track, analyse, and report key performance metrics (e.g., feed conversion rates, mortality, live weight)
  • Drive innovation - from food management to animal data technology

Who You Are

  • Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, or related field
  • Medium proficiency with Microsoft 365
  • 2+ years experience with livestock or animal care
  • Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills
  • Tanzanian nationality
  • English and Swahili proficiency

Nice-to-Haves

  • Familiarity with livestock data systems and/or ERP software
  • Knowledge of livestock value chains
  • Master's degree or specialisation in animal nutrition, breeding, or agribusiness
  • Additional languages
